Blackbutt Range To Be Re-Opened By Australia Day
January 20, 2011 - Weather permitting, the Blackbutt Range will be open to traffic by Australia Day (January 26). In a press release today, the Transport and Main Roads Department said it was giving high priority to establishing a safe route for motorists around the landslip sites on the D'Aguilar Highway. Twelve landslips have occurred along a 600m stretch of the highway, one of which covers both lanes of the road and requires major reconstruction work.The department's Acting District Director (Moreton) Penny Ford said immediate efforts were concentrated on developing a traffic sidetrack to provide access for motorists around the site. "Every endeavour is being made to restore connectivity of the D'Aguilar Highway however the safety of motorists must come first," Ms Ford said. "While comprehensive investigations of the site are underway, expert geotechnical advice has identified an alternative route that is safe for motorists. "Our crew will work through the weekend to ensure this route is ready and open for business by Wednesday next week (January 26), weather permitting."Ms Ford said just getting in to assess the location had been difficult due to the extent of the wet weather and the amount of water impacting the site. "We had to wait for waters to recede before we could even examine the huge scope of the slips via helicopter flyovers. It's only been since last Thursday that vehicles could actually get in and deliver experts to assess the damage," she said. "Most road users appreciate how critical this work is and I thank all road users for their understanding." * * *Some more good news ... South Burnett Regional Mayor David Carter said today that - weather permitting - the badly damaged section of the Wondai-Chinchilla Road at Okeden Creek is expected to be re-opened by Sunday (January 23).

Pratt Joins Battle To Re-Open Range
January 19, 2011 - Member for Nanango Dorothy Pratt has joined the battle to re-open the Blackbutt Range, telling Mains Road Minister Craig Wallace that it should be a greater priority than the Toowoomba Range, which at least is trafficable. In a letter sent to the Minister yesterday, Mrs Pratt said the Blackbutt Range closure was causing hardship to businesses in Moore, Benarkin, Blackbutt and Yarraman. "There is a severe impact on businesses in four small towns who rely heavily on passing traffic and who have indicated they cannot survive long without this continuous traffic flow ... Businesses in all these towns have stated passing traffic constitutes a minimum 50 per cent of their income," she said. "If these businesses fail communities will have no shopping facilities in at least three of these towns." Mrs Pratt also pointed out that the larger communities in the South Burnett rely heavily on transport on the D'Aguilar Highway to re-stock businesses, primary producers need to access abattoirs at Kilcoy and Dinmore and residents have referrals to specialist medical treatment in Brisbane. * * *The South Burnett Regional Council has advised that the section of road between the Wilsons Road intersection and the Broadcreek Road intersection (Muller's Corner) on Burrandowan Road is now closed. Heavy vehicles driving on the saturated pavement have been blamed for causing the damage. A load limit has also been placed on the open section of the Burrandowan Road. Local traffic wanting to access farms in the road closed section may do so if it is safe. * * *

January 17, 2011 - The Department of Environment and Resource Management has postponed its decision on Cougar Energy's UCG pilot plant near Kingaroy to Friday, January 28, 2011.

The administering authority received the final set of reports from Cougar on December 10, 2010.

Nanango Primary School Devastated By Flooding
January 17, 2011 - Rumours that the Nanango State Primary School was devastated by the recent floods are true, a school spokesperson confirmed today.
A torrent of water which passed through the school during the height of flooding along lower Drayton Street last week destroyed nearly all of the school's carpets and left the Prep School building in ruins.
As well, the school library lost more than 90 per cent of its Junior Fiction collection and all their learning support resources; many outdoor and sports items in the school shed were destroyed as well.
Only 11 of the school's rooms were unaffected by flooding, the spokesperson said, and volunteers have been labouring for the past few days to get the school back to basic operational status in time for the resumption of classes next Monday.
The school is listed for flood repairs by Education Queensland and is likely to be fully restored in the next few months.
ABOVE RIGHT: Nanango State School in happier days ... it will reopen next Monday for the start of Term 1 thanks to the efforts of volunteers but conditions are likely to be very basic until Education Queensland can arrange repairs

The Peanut Van re-opened its outlets in Kingaroy, Childers and at Aussie World on reduced hours on Friday and has launched a "flood sale" to help reduce stock built up because of the flooding.1kg packs of flavoured peanuts have been reduced to $15.00; salt roasted peanuts have been reduced to $8.95/kg and 375g packs of flavoured peanuts are now 2 for $17.00 and 3 for $24.00. Do You Want To Lend A Hand?
January 13, 2011 - We've been cut off, we've lost power, we've been short of some groceries - and there have been some voluntary evacuations - but admit it, most South Burnett residents have escaped the real trauma that has hit much of southern Queensland. Feeling guilty? Well, here's how you can help ... by donating to the major flood appeals that have been established to help our fellow Queenslanders get back on their feet: * * *Queensland Police have issued a general warning to beware of scammers who may knock on your door asking for donations. Always check the identity of doorknockers and internet-based appeals to ensure your money is going to those who desperately need it. The best way to ensure this is to: - Ask the doorknocker/collector to provide identification
- Ask for proof of which charity they are collecting for
- Check that the charity is a registered charity
* * *If you need help, the following links may be of assistance:- Information about Disaster Recovery Payments is available on the Centrelink website;
- Information for small businesses and primary producers is on the QRAA website;
- The Department of Community Services also has information about financial assistance available;
- The Red Cross is helping people to reconnect with family and friends through the National Registration and Inquiry System. NB. The Red Cross has not launched its own appeal for flood-affected Queenslanders because the Premier of Queensland has already launched the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal for the same purpose;
- The Queensland Rural Women's Network has also put together a comprehensive list of assistance.
